Newly.wed // 02

I remember when Ben and I were in a long distance relationship. We made time for each other on the phone every day, but it wasn't the same as being together in person. The semester that I was abroad in Italy was the hardest - I missed him so much it was like a physical ache. And I remember saying, so many times, how much I would give to just be next to him - even if we weren't doing anything, it would be enough just to be in each other's presence.

I wonder how I would have felt back then had I been able to see into the future. I wonder if I would have felt less anxious and impatient if I had a crystal ball that revealed our lives today: we regularly spend 24+ hours together. Because we live and work from home (with separate jobs), we have moved to the opposite extreme of spending more time together than is probably healthy for two independent adults. And yet, somehow, we've made it work and haven't killed or divorced each other yet, so hopefully this arrangement will work out. Because if I'm honest, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love how intertwined our lives have become, and even more so since signing a marriage certificate.

But just because this works for us, doesn't necessarily mean that it's for everyone - some couples actually get along better apart, and that's great. In fact, I'm not even sure why it works for us, given that I have an insanely large (invisible) bubble that protects my personal space, and Ben takes alone time very seriously. When you first get married or decide to live with your significant other, the thought of living intimately with this other person can be terrifying because you have no idea if it's going to work out. I was a terrible roommate in college while I was living with other girls, always frustrated that I couldn't voice my problems or the way I was really feeling, and I was definitely concerned that the real me would come out when we lived together and Ben would not want to be around me anymore. But maybe that's the key to the whole thing:

We accept each other exactly as we are. (Or, at least, we try to, because, let's be honest, we're not anywhere close to perfect. But for the most part, we like the quirky things about each other.)

This means two things: we respect each other's individual preferences, and we are willing to speak up without judgement if something isn't working (and then work it out together). But what makes these two things possible is the fact that we can be honest with ourselves about our strengths and weaknesses. I know that the cranky-college-roommate-me comes out every now and then - she doesn't come out when everything is going well, she comes out when things are rocky, and then we know that it's time to deal with the real issues. Ben doesn't get mad about it, he helps me work through it. And it's okay that Ben sneaks off to his man cave to play video games or puts in headphones when he can't take any more of my chatter stream that goes on like an endless playlist of thoughts. I don't get offended that he's ignoring me, I accept that he needs his space to do his thing. And instead of resenting him for leaving me out, I love that he still makes the time to do the things he loves, even if I'm not a part of it. I use that time to catch up on Say Yes to the Dress, Downton Abbey, or Grey's Anatomy, so that when he does want to hang out again, we can do things together.

I guess that in three years of living together and almost six months of being married and working together, I've learned that it's better to live with someone when you can both be completely yourself, both the good parts and the not-so-good parts of yourself. Because when that happens, it no longer matters that someone else is in your space…instead, you can't imagine living anywhere without them.

DIY Diary // 04

Latest obsession: giant paper flowers. Like so, see above. I want to pull that off.

I used to think I wasn't a flower person (kind of like that time I thought I wasn't a pink person...). But then spring rolls around and I find flowers on my mind and in my pictures a lot. That, and I am obsessed with flowers used as a statement, to add a sense of style, and I can't help but feel uplifted when I see a pop of color or a graceful petal that beautifies a space or a place or a celebration. This past week while in Nashville, I was even compelled to stop into a cute little store upon seeing gigantic flowers in the window.

And, I love it when my husband (or anyone, really) sends me flowers. I will always remember the Valentine's day that I got a surprise delivery of tulips from my dad. It might have just been the best gift he ever gave me...something that was completely unexpected, I wouldn't do for myself, but let everyone know how much he cared. There is no better feeling than being the recipient of thoughtfulness and love.

Problem is, I have furry children who eat flowers like cupcakes. Keeping live flowers in the house is a luxury that can be dangerous to them, so we, sadly, avoid it as much as possible. Although live flowers have a special energy all their own, I've seen a whole bunch of DIY paper options floating around over the past few months and am thinking of trying to make some flowers for the house to bring in the beauty of spring.

So here's a little roundup of some fabulous looking DIY flowers for you to make one or many...to bring joy into your home for spring, or to save and make the next time you need something to make a celebration extra joyful.

Annapolis Again

I never really intended to document Annapolis all the time. Or its flowers. But I'm making an effort to take my camera with me everywhere, to get lllloootttsss of practice. And I can't help but snap a few. And no matter which direction I point my camera, it seems to redirect itself to flowers. Or sailboats.

Whereas in most other towns, parents send their kids to art camp or sports camp, the Annapolitans believe in sailing camp. It's not summer until you see the miniature sailboats with miniature captains floating leisurely across the Severn River. While I think it would be fun, I'm pretty sure this kid is wishing his parents had sent him to sports camp instead...

And just because, here's one more with flowers...I think it's the colors. I'm always drawn to the colors.

Happy Thursday!

Remembering the Details

My favorite thing about my new fiancee...

Side note: I have been trying to avoid that word for the past week. Not because I don't appreciate the meaning of it...believe me, I love having one, and being one. But because the word itself sounds like I have something stuck up my nose. Which makes me think of boogers. And although that's a funny word, it's not something I like associating with the one I'm going to marry. So generally, that's how I now refer to Ben. As "That Person I'm Going To Marry."

Back to the story behind these pictures.

My favorite thing about Ben is that he encourages me to follow my passions. Mostly meaning photography, but there are other things too. But my point today is photography. Last Sunday, before we went on our five mile walk that didn't end in anything spectacular, he encouraged me to bring along my camera.

The funny part about it was that he was going try to propose in a photograph. How cute is that?

The other funny part is that it required my trusty digital camera in order to pull it off. But what did I reach for? My film camera, because it is sadly gathering dust lately. I thought it would be a good opportunity to break it out.

As I reached for it, he asked why I was bringing that one. I said because I wanted to. It says a lot about his ability to hold it together that he managed to convince me to bring along my digital without me suspecting anything.

It was one of those details that I didn't realize until the entire story unfolded.

These are the pictures that I snapped that day. And I'm glad that I did, even if they're not the best pictures I've ever taken, because now they are a special part of one of my favorite stories.

P.S. When I was five I had one of these...and I'm pretty sure that when my best friend and I dressed up like brides, I wore this as my headpiece, instead of a veil. I'm pretty sure I will not be doing that at my real wedding.

Happy Tuesday!

Fleurs

I took French in high school. And sometimes it creeps back into my vocabulary.

Like the other day when Ben and I were walking downtown. We passed all these wonderful flowers. And I insisted on calling them fleurs. Without the french accent. So it sounded like "flurs." Very classy, I assure you.

iPhone Photo Monday: Spring Colors

Got a cute little lens for my iPhone in my Easter Basket. And a toy dinosaur. And PEEPS. And of course, chocolate. Um, not to sound snotty, but I'm pretty sure I would hunt down the Easter Bunny if it didn't have chocolate.

Spring colors make me happy. And also, I just noticed that the fire hydrant appears to be spraying sunlight. I heart happy accidents.

That's all I've got for today...hope you had a happy Easter!

Annapolis in the Spring

I heart spring. Just in case you couldn't tell, I'm making it official.

Since the weather was so nice yesterday, I took a little photo walk of some of my favorite things in Annapolis and some of my favorite things about spring: boats, flowers blooming, sunny skies, water, the color yellow...

And this hearty daffodil, that just couldn't stay fenced in. It had to explore beyond its boundaries and experience the rest of the world.

All of these were taken on film; the for the top two, I used my new dreamy Diana Lens...which I love. It's blurry quality makes it feel whimsical and carefree...so much like spring!

Portraits: Amy

I am fully aware of the number of pictures I have of my cat. And he is awesome, so I don't care. But. It would be good for my future as a photographer to get some pictures of someone (something?) else.

Aslan took the weekend off, so I present my next muse...my sister.

After taking some nice photos, we got a little silly. I think I mentioned that she's a balloon artist.
